Lassa Fever Kills Doctor, Three Others In Anambra


A medical doctor and 3 others have been reported dead from Lassa fever infection in Anambra state.

This was disclosed yesterday by a resource person Dr. Jane Ezeonu at a workshop on Lassa fever organized by the state Ministry of Health.

Ezeonu said the doctor died at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, three days ago, and was referred to NAUTH from Asaba, Delta state, warning the people to stop drinking raw garri and protect their food from rats.

Turkey Government Transfers International Students, Others To Universities With No “Coup” Ties


The Turkish government has directed all students affected by the closure of some higher institutions in the country to resume full academic classes in other government-owned institutions in the country.

A statement by the Turkish Embassy in Nigeria said all students including international students will relocate to the nation’s state universities approved by the government.

“All students regardless of their nationality have been transferred to the same city State Universities,” the statement said.

Militants Strike Again, Blow Up NNDC Pipeline


Two pipelines belonging to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, NPDC, were in the early hours of Friday blown up by gunmen suspected to be Niger Delta militants.

Local community sources who confirmed the development, said about two pipelines operated by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company were blown up at about 2am.

Hospital Patients Provide Cotton Wool, Menthylated Spirit - ABUTH Doctors


The Association of Resident Doctors, Ahmadu Bello University Hospital, has lamented the high level of rot in the tertiary healthcare institution, saying patients now provide cotton wool and methylated spirit for their treatment.

Members of the association, who lodged their complaints with the Senate on Friday, said they had held a week’s protest and would embark on a three-day warning strike on Monday, after which an indefinite strike would hold should the management of the hospital fail to respond.

One In Five Kano Kids Die Before Age 5 - Survey


The Recent Nigerian National Demographic Survey (NDHS) presented by Partnership for Advocacy in Child and Family Health (PACFaH) has revealed that in Kano state, for every 1000 live-births, 185 of them will die before they mark the age of 5 in Kano State, Nigeria.

This is translated to one in every five children is dying before attaining the age of 5.

Presenting the fact sheet during an advocacy visit on the treatment of childhood pneumonia and diarrhoea, to the Managing Director Kano state Drugs and Medical Consumables supply Agency (DMCSA),programme director PACFaH, Pharmacist Remi Adeseun said pneumonia and diarrhoea accounts for 14% and 15% of the foregoing under-five mortality rate respectively, adding that advocacy has become necessary as Kano state has the highest burden of childhood pneumonia in North-Western region of the country.

Nigeria Inaugurates Locally Built Navy Gun Boats

The Nigerian Navy on Wednesday in Lagos inaugurated 39 gun boats and 45 operational vehicles to assist the fight against criminals and vandals in parts of the country. Thirty of the boats were built in Nigeria.

At the inauguration, Minister of State for Defence, Mohammad Dan-Ali, said that the gun boats were fitted with appropriate weapons and anti-ballistic protection to enhance optimal efficiency.

Naira Gains Strength Against The Dollar


The Naira ended 5.2 percent higher at 308 per dollar on Friday after the central bank sold dollars to support the currency, traders said.

The naira, which touched an all-time low of 365.25 on Thursday, closed at 324 per dollar in the previous session.
