The Federal Capital Territory Administration
said its Special Task Team on Abuja Environmental Protection has broken a
syndicate of suspected suppliers of beggars to strategic locations in Abuja.
It stated that seven suspects were arrested
during a raid, adding that they had been handed over to the police for
investigation and prosecution.
The Chairman of the FCT Special Task Team,
Squad Leader Abdullahi Monjel (retd.) disclosed this on Wednesday while
parading the suspects at the FCDA Police Station, Area 11, Garki I District,
Abuja, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the FCT
minister, Muhammed Sule.
The statement explained that the leader of
the syndicate, Baba Gwarma from Kaduna State, is based in Karma-Jiji, a suburb
of Abuja with their leader (Sarki) in the same vicinity.
“Gwarma has three personal vehicles for
movement of beggars in and around Abuja as well as in neigbouring states of Nasarawa, Niger and
Kaduna states,” Monjel was quoted say.
It added that Gwarma also has houses that he
had rented out to provide shelter for the beggars in Karma-Jiji.
The statement accused the beggars of
attacking the task team personnel with
dangerous weapons during the raid on their residence.
“The Chairman stated that the suspect
(Gwarma) has been arrested more than 50 times in the past, but this time he
would be charged to court for subsequent prosecution,” the statement said.
