A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the coast
of Chile at 1:26 p.m. local time (same time EDT) Monday afternoon, according to
the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor occurred at a depth of 42.5 miles,
the USGS also reported. The quake's epicenter was 41 miles west-northwest of
Diego de Almagro, Chile, which has a population of about 18,000.
In the Atacama Desert, the shaking created a
cloud of dust over parts of the bone-dry region.
There have been no immediate reports of
damage or injuries. A tsunami alert was not issued following the quake.
