The woman known only as Ms Fan was reported
to have been leaning over a railing when she fell.
The 32-year-old spent almost two days lost at
sea without a life jacket after falling from the ship in the choppy waters of
the East China Sea.
She was found 38 hours after falling
overboard by a fishing vessel suffering from the effects of jellyfish stings
and dehydration.
Ms Fan had boarded the ship in Shanghai for a
five-day trip to South Korea and Japan
But her holiday was plunged into misery when
she fell overboard at night time.
The woman told reporters she was a good
swimmer but was left shocked when she fell from the colossal vessel she was
travelling in.
According to reports she screamed for help
but no one was on deck to help.
She said she managed to prevent herself from
drowning by floating on the surface and treading water.
Her father raised the alarm and asked to
check the cruise ship’s surveillance cameras to find out what happened to her.
However the CCTV did not capture the moment
she fell into the water and but the footage showed her merely walking on deck.
She was found by a fishermen who rescued her
off the coast of Zhoushan City, in East China’s Zhejiang Province.
They then transferred her to another fishing
boat who brought her to the mainland where she was admitted to a hospital.
The miraculous escape has baffled coastguard
who say it was akin to her falling from a six storey building.
Jellyfish stings are relatively common
problems for people swimming, wading or diving in seawaters.
However, they can be fatal depending on the
variety of the fish and of the person's tolerance to a sting.
Last year a 20-year-old German woman died
after being stung multiple times by a box jellyfish at a tourist-popular Thai
resort.
